NSS Day Celebrations: Empowering Youth for a Better Tomorrow

Since 1969, every year on September 24th, the National Service Scheme (NSS) Day is commemorated to honour its founding and the noble mission it stands for. NSS, a youth program operated by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Government of India, was established with the aim of nurturing the all-round development of young individuals and inculcating in them a spirit of social responsibility and community service.

The Founding of NSS

NSS was officially established on September 24, 1969. This day, every year is celebrated as NSS Day to pay tribute to its founding and to recognise the significant role it has played in shaping the youth of India. RV Rao was the man behind this visionary initiative who initiated NSS with 37 universities across India.

The NSS Motto: "Not Me, But You"

At the heart of NSS lies a powerful motto: "Not Me, But You." This motto embodies the essence of selfless service and community engagement that NSS instils in its volunteers. When an NSS volunteer engages in any service, they do so without seeking personal credit. Instead, they attribute the success of the work to the collective "you," symbolizing the community or society they serve. However, when it comes to taking responsibility and initiative, an NSS volunteer is quick to step forward with the resounding call of "not you, but me."

NSS Foundation Day Celebrations at Lords University

On the occasion of NSS Foundation Day, the NSS Unit of Lords University celebrated the spirit of service and community engagement. Dr. Pradeep Kumar, the NSS officer, shared the history and ethos of NSS with the students. He emphasized the significance of the NSS motto and how it epitomizes the selfless spirit of volunteerism.

Prof. AK Pathak, Dean of the Agriculture Department, inspired the students to actively participate in uplifting the nation through their actions and service. The celebration was not limited to speeches; the students also actively contributed to their community by cleaning the premises. They then engaged in a friendly game of volleyball, promoting teamwork and affinity.

The NSS Day celebration serves as a reminder of the values of selfless service and community development that NSS stands for. It encourages young minds to step forward, take responsibility, and actively contribute to the betterment of society, thus shaping them into responsible and compassionate citizens of tomorrow.
