Empowering Change: The Impact of Campus Cleanliness Drive by NSS

Launched in 1969, NSS is an extended dimension of higher education to orient students towards community service. The launch of this scheme was done in 37 universities and 40,000 students. The NSS is under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India.

The motto of the NSS: “NOT ME BUT YOU”

The ideals of Gandhi ji inspired the ideological orientation behind NSS. Thus, the volunteers of NSS believe in the philosophy, “not me but you” echoing the vision of Gandhi ji. That is why Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, launched the “Swachh Bharat Mission” on 2nd October 2014. This mass movement was aimed at fulfilling the dream of Gandhi Ji. His dream was total sanitation for all. The concept of Swachh Bharat began with the pledge “I shall not litter and won't allow anyone to do so.” Modi Ji gave this slogan and encouraged everyone to follow in his footsteps. Lords University is equally committed to the ambition of cleanliness and keeps the university clean and sanitized.

The idea of introducing social services for students encompasses both aspects, one, as a measure of social reform and the second to improve the quality of an educated workforce. That was the era when Dr. Radhakrishan, who was then the head of the University Grants Commission, introduced national service in academic institutions voluntarily to develop healthy contacts between the campus and the community. The various activities undertaken by the NSS are the National Integration Camp, Shramdaan, blood donation, immunization, plantation, disaster management and adventure camps.

Symbol of NSS - Wheel of Konark Sun Temple

The Konark Sun temple is situated in Orissa. The wheels of the sun temple portray creation, and it signifies the creation of life across space and life. The Konark wheel in the NSS badge has 8 bars that signify the 24 hours of a day. These bars are reminders to the wearer to be ready for the service of the nation around the clock. The color red signifies the energy and spirit displayed by NSS volunteers. On the other hand, the color blue represents the big cosmos that NSS is a part of and should be ready to contribute its share for the welfare of humanity.

Cleanliness campaign by the Lords Unit of NSS

The NSS unit of Lords University spearheaded a cleanliness drive across the university campus, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a clean and hygienic environment for all.

Under this initiative, students, faculty, and staff come together to dedicate their time and effort to various cleanliness activities.

The activity began with an informative lecture by Dr. Pradeep Yadav and the Dean of the Agricultural Department, Dr. A. K Pathak. Both of them extensively talked about the importance of cleanliness and how, from litter picking and waste segregation to organizing awareness sessions on the importance of sustainable waste management practices, every endeavor was guided by the principle of collective action for the greater good. These activities serve as a reminder of the values of selfless service and community development that NSS stands for.

Lords University takes full responsibility for actively contributing towards the betterment of society, thus shaping students into responsible beings and making them compassionate humans for the future.
